SM490 Steel Description
SM490 is a high-strength structural steel specified in JIS G3106, mainly used for welded structures such as bridges, ships, steel frames, and heavy machinery. It belongs to the same family as SM400 but offers higher yield and tensile strength.
Available in grades SM490A, SM490B, and SM490C, this steel ensures excellent weldability and toughness, especially in applications requiring enhanced structural reliability.
-
SM490A: General welded structural steel
-
SM490B: Improved impact toughness at 0°C
-
SM490C: Guaranteed impact toughness at -20°C
Its tensile strength of 490–610 MPa and yield strength of 325 MPa make it suitable for demanding engineering structures. For comparison, SM490 is the Japanese equivalent to EN S355JR / ASTM A572 Gr.50 / GB Q345B.
