SM490 Structural Steel Plate

SM490 high-strength structural steel plate for welded structures, combining excellent weldability, toughness, and strength for heavy construction projects.

  • High Strength & Reliability: Yield strength around 325 MPa provides excellent load-bearing capacity.

  • Good Weldability: Low carbon equivalent allows smooth welding without cracking.

  • Toughness at Low Temperature: SM490 grades offer guaranteed impact resistance.

  • Excellent Formability: Suitable for bending, cutting, and fabrication processes.

  • Wide Application Range: Commonly used in bridges, buildings, and ship construction.

SM490 Steel Description

SM490 is a high-strength structural steel specified in JIS G3106, mainly used for welded structures such as bridges, ships, steel frames, and heavy machinery. It belongs to the same family as SM400 but offers higher yield and tensile strength.

Available in grades SM490A, SM490B, and SM490C, this steel ensures excellent weldability and toughness, especially in applications requiring enhanced structural reliability.

  • SM490A: General welded structural steel

  • SM490B: Improved impact toughness at 0°C

  • SM490C: Guaranteed impact toughness at -20°C

Its tensile strength of 490–610 MPa and yield strength of 325 MPa make it suitable for demanding engineering structures. For comparison, SM490 is the Japanese equivalent to EN S355JR / ASTM A572 Gr.50 / GB Q345B.

SM490 Applications

SM490 steel plate is widely applied in structural and welded engineering projects that demand higher strength and durability, including:

  • Bridges and high-rise buildings

  • Shipbuilding and marine equipment

  • Heavy machinery frames and cranes

  • Pressure vessels and storage tanks

  • Offshore structures and welded platforms

With its balanced weldability and mechanical performance, SM490 is the preferred choice for structural fabricators seeking both strength and toughness.

SM490 Steel FAQs

What is the difference between SM490A, SM490B, and SM490C?
The main difference is in impact toughness: SM490A has no specified value, SM490B is tested at 0°C, and SM490C is tested at -20°C.
What are the equivalent grades of SM490 in other standards?
SM490 is equivalent to EN S355JR / ASTM A572 Gr.50 / GB Q345B, all used for structural and welded construction.
Is SM490 suitable for bridge or heavy structure fabrication?
Yes — SM490’s high yield strength and good weldability make it ideal for bridges, ship hulls, cranes, and buildings.
